I’m sure you know that not all free web hosting is created equal. So what are the differences and what should you be looking for when considering a free host? What makes the best web host? One consideration is how much web space the company is allowing you. Another is how much web hosting customer support they provide. Can you upload pictures or logos? Of course it is going to depend on what type of website you want to host as well. If you are creating a personal website to share with family and friends, posting pictures will probably be a key feature. If you are creating a more dynamic business website you may need a shopping cart or catalog feature.
Here we will do a brief comparison of three free web hosting providers. Free Web Space, Free Websites and Webs (formerly Freewebs). In our Free Web Space review we found that they are offering 100 MB of free web space. They provide a free domain name or you can use your own if you already have one. Free Web Space also provides you with a web-based file manager or FTP for uploading files. They don’t list much as far as support options. Under technical support they have a “give us your feedback” option from which you can choose what type of feedback you want to give then fill out a form. There is also a place to contact the billing department and a form to report user violations.
Our Free Websites review found that you will have unlimited free web space but they only offer FTP access or uploading and they don’t offer help on how to use it. There is no free website builder to help you create or upload graphics to your site, so you really have to know how to do it yourself. They do not offer or provide domains, you must have your own. They have limited support and it is only available through a website contact form.
In our Webs review we found this site to be much more first time website builder friendly. They have a simple layout, over 300 website templates that you can choose from, simple ways to add and organize photos, videos, blogs, forums, and more. There help forum seems to be very user friendly and is community driven. They have a staff member monitoring the boards Mon-Fri 8 AM-6 PM US Eastern time. But other users may jump in any time with helpful solutions as well. This is a great place for a beginner to go to create a site. You can purchase your own domain if you upgrade your account or use a free subdomain from Webs.
